Listening to this, I thought of a time when I was living in southern California, and a few friends and I gathered at a park a few days before our lease ended. Pink and orange filled the sky and looking out toward the valley nearby we talked of the pending world that lied ahead of us. A congested job market, a world recuperating from COVID, and a formative chapter closing behind us to push us into a new reality. Yet in spite of we expressed gratitude and love for each other and this part of our lives. Blxst’s choice to cover Pink + White acoustically encapsulates this sense of uncertainty mixed with longing, but unites us with a new take on one of the greatest albums that defined a generation.
Hearing Blxst’s cover felt like going back to a nostalgic time of when Blxst proliferated through the charts with his debut album ‘No Love Lost’, coupled with the hope that Frank Ocean would release another undeniable hit was still alive. Frank’s melodic and transcendent vocals backs Blxst’s distinctive voice that has backed some of west coast bounce’s biggest hits in the 2020s, reminding his fans of smooth kickbacks and warm summer nights with the people you hold close. Releasing this cover at this point in time, with the music overlaying a panning shot of the classic LA landscape — one-to-three story houses and apartments contrasting with tall palm trees flowing as wistful balloons in the sky, all within a wash of beautiful tones of pink and orange — it highlights the beauty, warmth, and familiarity of a city many call home, as LA suffers through a siege of wildfires that evaporates the sense of it. It’s as if the video calls for LA natives to never lose sight of the beauty and stories that remains and demonstrates that art can remind people to never forget where they come from; that in a storm of uncertainty and panic, home is remembered and still here.
“The way it is, we’re on land
So I’m someone to hold true
Keep you cool when it’s still alive
Won’t let you down when it’s all ruin”
